This was one of my first projects in Mari, with the purpose being to familiarize myself with the software, and get more accustomed to using higher quality hand painting methods.
I chose a rusted gear wheel as my subject for this project because it provided lots of opportunities for different texture layers and techniques. The texture and overall construction was roughly inspired by an image of a real-life gear wheel I found online, shown in the screenshot below.
